The festival, Diwali or Deepavali, is not only popular for its dazzling show of lights, but also because on this day offering prayers to Goddess Lakshmi establishes prosperity. Apart from this, Diwali has a deeper significance because of its special ‘Swayam Siddha Muhurta’. The speciality of this Muhurta is when people indulge in kind actions like;  charity and service on the day of Dhanteras and Diwali that brings happiness and good luck.

Dhanteras and Diwali are the two days that is said to be the right time to please the different planets to get positive effects.  People belonging to different moon signs can perform puja as per their Rashi and Lagna on Dhanteras and Diwali during ‘Swayam Siddha Muhurta.’  If the Lakshmi Puja is done according to your favorable Lagna, it will bring good luck. The best Lagna can be known only after reading your horoscope.
What should you do on the day of Diwali?
We all like to be blessed with prosperity and wealth by Goddess Lakshmi on dhanteras day. Apart form performing the customary religious rituals,  light a lamp and pray to lord Vishnu for prosperity and success.
Make offering to your ancestors on Diwali day during afternoon hours. You can perform tarpan rituals and feed a Brahmin. Take this opportunity to seek blessing from your forefathers for a prosperous life.
After bath wear white or red clothes when performing Lakshmi Puja in the evening. Avoid wearing blue or black clothes. Light the lamp in the evening and seek the blessing of your parents if you are performing puja at midnight.
According to Skanda Purana, it is said that during evening hours, burning an earthen lamp with four wicks brings good luck. It is believed that four wicks on lamp represents chaturvarga or four goals of human life. You can further use 26 more earthen lamps surrounding this four-wick lamp, and be left burning throughout the night.  After the puja is over this 26 earthen lamp is placed on both sides of the main entrance of the house. The lamps can be placed in the kitchen, study room, in your garden, drawing room, etc.
This practice of the earthen lamp is called Deep Daan has its significance. According to Hindu mythology human body is made of five factors; Air, water, sky, earth and fire. The earthen lamps represent this principle. The lamp symbolizes earth; the oil represents water, the wick signifies sky, and the power that takes the oil to the flame means Air, and the fire represents heat.
Let Diwali bestow you with good luck and enable you to discover your roots. Diwali is more like a way of living irrespective of caste and class.
