What is Sub-Lord ?
When the Zodiac is divided into 27 equal parts of 130 20’, each part is called a Nakshatra. On further division of a Nakshatra into 9 parts in the order of the Vimshottari Dasas starting from the Nakshatra lord with each part being in proportion to the duration of a Dasa, we get what are known as subs. The lord of a Nakshatra is called the Nakshatra lord and the lord of the sub is called the sub-lord.
In each star, the first sub-lord is the planet who rules the Nakshatra and then the remaining sub-lords follows. For example, the first sub-lord under Aswini Nakshatra is Ketu, the second sub-lord is Venus, the third sub-lord is Sun etc. Similarly since Venus is the lord of Bharani, the first sub-lord would be Venus, the second Sun, the third Moon and so on.
The span of a sub-lord is calculated as follows:
Span of a sub-lord = Dasa period in years – 120 x 130 20’.
For example, span of sub-lord Ketu in Aries in Aswini Nakshatra
=7 ÷ 120 X 13° 20’ = 0° 46’ 40”.
Span of Sub-lord Venus in Aries in Aswini star
=20 ÷ 120 X 13° 20’ = 2° 13’ 20”
A well-placed 5th house, 5th lord, Mercury and Jupiter give excellent educational opportunities. The 9th sign of the Zodiac indicates teachers and lawyers, the 7th businessmen and the 8th, doctors. The sub-lord of the 3rd Bhava either owned or aspected by a malefic shows poor memory powers, lack of confidence and obstacles to education.

The 4th house, the 4th lord and Vidyakaraka Mercury and Jupiter indicate education. Malefics in the 4th give breaks in studies. Jupiter and Mercury well-situated give good memory, concentration and aptitude for studies. The 4th house aspected by the 4th and the 5th lords or Jupiter indicates good educational opportunities. Whether one gets education or not is judged from sub-lords of the 4th, 9th and 11th Bhavas. These days when education has assumed great importance in getting good jobs, an astrological study of the native’s horoscope to select the right field of study can be of great help.
