The lords of the 6th or the 8th work unbearable havoc unless suitably placed or well aspected by a good and powerful Jupiter. A very wealthy banker was born in Leo Ascendant with the Sun, Mercury and Rahu in the 11th. But unfortunately, his Saturn Dasa came, Saturn being in the 4th aspecting the 10th as the lord of the 6th and the 7th. I frankly told him as Saturn Dasa advanced, his estate and status would be adversely affected and he would be able to subsist only on the properties settled on his second wife by him, in the evening of his life. And it happened so, most, unfortunately. By the way, Saturn is very bad for Leo Ascendant natives, unless he is in the 11th or passably in the 7th in own house or in the 3rd in exaltation (in which case he gives a rich wife). I know a Virgo Ascendant native during the days of the British rule, with Saturn, lord of the 6th (and the 5th) in exaltation in the 2nd, with Venus lord of the 2nd in the 6th with Mercury and Mars in the 10th. He was the eldest son of a very rich and famous landlord. He was a municipal chairman for a term. But, there were several court decrees against him; and his name used to be called as a judgement-debtor, frequently. Of course, he managed to escape civil arrest in pursuance of decrees. But his was a case of one born in a high and rich family, having an unenviable reputation as a chronic debtor.
Mark Mercury, lord of the Ascendant, weak in the 6th with Venus, lord of the 2nd and the 9th, very weak in the 6th and the 6th lord being exalted in the 2nd, the exchange of houses between the lord of the 2nd and the lord of the 6th being a bad Parivartana, causing a Duryoga or a malefic Yoga. Thanks to Mars in the 10th, as lord of the 8th, he was responsible for a serious case against his younger brother, who shot his servant dead, in a quarrel over a tree! But the younger brother born in Aries Ascendant with Mars in the 3rd, showing rashness and Saturn in the 8th showing serious trouble, was acquitted, as the brilliant barrister of those days successfully pleaded private defence, the sovereign merit of this younger brother’s chart being Jupiter, lord of the 9th with the Moon, lord of the 4th in the 5th in Leo, aspecting the 9th.
I remember in those days, the elder brother asking me and my frankly telling him that despite his antipathy to his younger brother, I had to say that the younger brother’s horoscope was the superior one. The youngest brother was a District Board President. He was entangled in a 302 I.P.C. case but was acquitted by the Sessions Judge, on account of his advocate, in the 6th with Mercury and Mars in the 10th.
Thanks to Mars in the 10th, as lord of the 8th, he was responsible for a serious case against his younger brother, who shot his putting forward successfully a plea of self-defence. The younger brother’s chart shows the evil of Saturn, lord of the 10th in the 8th in Scorpio. But as Saturn is also Badhaka in the 8th and as the Sun, lord of the 5th where Jupiter and the Moon were placed, was exalted in the Ascendant, he was acquitted. Later on, he died a natural death; and he was not convicted nor hanged. Shakespeare said long ago, that a man “destined to be drowned cannot be hanged”. The lord of the 9th in the 5th, Jupiter, in Chandra-Kendra (Kendra from the Moon) and lord of the 5th exalted in an Aries Ascendant horoscope show Poorvapunya enough to override and supersede the evil of Saturn, lord of the 10th in the 8th — even though Jupiter does not aspect Saturn. But, the evil of Trikas and their lords are much more in the Virgo Ascendant horoscope in which the lords of the 1st (and the 10th) and the 2nd (and the 9th) are in the 6th, and the lord of the 6th is exalted in the 2nd, and the lord of the 8th is in the 10th. Mars, lord of the 3rd in the 10th, shows a more famous and well-off younger brother.
The Bhavas or houses whose lords are in the 6th or the 8th or the 12th are rather weak indeed; and such planets cause repeated disappointment and frustration in respect of the significations of the Bhava or house unless there is a really powerful redeeming aspect. There is a Sloka which says,
Gajaanaam pankamagnaanaam
gajaa eva durandharaah
meaning, that if elephants fall into a pit, only elephants can lift the fallen animals.
Even so, only a powerful aspect of a real benefic, good also by lordship, can redeem a planet in the 6th or the 8th or the 12th like God’s Grace and benign Providence. Kerala Asans (hereditary astrologers in Kerala) used to say that the lord of a good house like the 1st or the 4th or the 5th or the 7th or the 9th or the 10th in the 6th or the 8th or the 12th, is in Adhah patanam or bad fall. The Tamil classic Kumaraswamiyam emphasizes that for the lord of a house to lift the Bhava, he should not be in a hidden house – the 3rd or the 6th or the 8th or the 12th especially the 6th or the 8th or the 12th from Ascendant (I would add from the lord of the Ascendant, too!), from the Moon and from its own (Moolatrikona) sign. Also, it should not be associated with the lords of the 6th or the 8th or the 12th.
Chart 1: Female: Born July 3, 1942 at 15h00m at 16N18, 80E27 with a balance of 14 years 7 months 15 days of Jupiter Dasa t birth
Chart 1 is of a lady who was not married though she was past 30 years. The young woman faced frustration in all attempts to get married. Why? The lord of the 7th is in debility or Neecha, without Neechabhanga. So, the lord of the 7th is powerless, married on the advent of Mercury Dasa. Mercury as lord of the 12th may be in the 8th. But, for females, lord of the 12th weak in the 8th, postpones and reduces the comforts and pleasures of the couch (Sayanasukha). And, lord of the 9th (Sowbhagyastana) in the 8th is not at all good. And, the 9th is occupied by Jupiter in combustion, as lord of the 3rd and the 6th and by the Sun, a Badhaka for Libra Ascendant. The 1st, the 5th, and the 9th lords are associated but, alas in the 8th house. Luckily Venus, lord of the 1st and the 8th (Mangalya), is in his own house, though in the 8th. So, it was that she did not remain a spinster but got married in 1976. But the husband was ordinary and not very prosperous, even though the dictum, regarding Mars, that Maane (in the 10th) Kuleerabhavane in Cancer, he gives sukha (happiness), saved her from being a life-long spinster and gave her a taste of marital life in Mercury Dasa, thanks to Mercury and Swakshetra (own sign) Venus being in Taurus, though in the 8th!
