Much Misunderstood Saturn

Much Misunderstood Saturn

SANI or Saturn is the most misunderstood planet in predictive astrology and branded as the most malefic among all the malefic planets. He is projected as a villain and many evils attributed to his occupation of different signs in the Rasi chart.
Saturn though malefic can bestow many favourable results depending upon his position and association with other planets.
Saturn falls under the category of malefics in the classification of planets as benefics and malefics and has been assigned certain duties. He is the ruler of Saturday, Tamasic in nature and represents learning the hard way, career and longevity.

Saturn being the Karmic planet, his main role is to clear off the accumulated debt of ignorance from the past life. Hence, Saturn’s portfolio in the various signs tends to be about trying and frustrating situations. He is known as “Sanaischara” or one who moves slowly.

An exalted or Swakshetra (own Rasi) Saturn in a Dustana or the 6th, 8th or the 12th can give very good results in one’s service life. A dignified Saturn in a Dustana generally confers public service typically through employment in a large organisation.

Kalidasa assigns about 95 significations (Karakattwas), both good and bad to Saturn in Uttarakalamrita. Most of these qualities are bad or on the negative side. All the other classic texts agree with Uttarakalamrita.

Characteristics

Saturn is strong from sunset to sunrise and also during the dark fortnight, when in retrograde motion, in Capricorn, Aquarius and Libra and in the southernly course. So also in the rising sign, when slow and when successful in war between Grahas. Saturn is weak in the first portion of a Rasi, moderately strong in the middle and strong at the end. But according to some, he is said to be strong in all places.

According to Alan Leo, Saturn restricts limits, binds and crystallizes everything, holding, restraining, fashioning and solidifying all that comes under his sphere of influence.

Brihat Parasara Hora, the most authoritative work on astrology, states that if Saturn is in his exaltation, own sign or Moolatrikona or friendly sign or in own or exalted Navamsa and in the 3rd or the 11th, there will be many good happenings during his Dasa which include recognition by government, wealth, glory, name and fame, success in the educational sphere, acquisition of conveyances and ornaments, gain of wealth, favors from government, attainment of a high position, acquisition of a kingdom, benevolence of Goddess Lakshmi, gain of property and birth of children.

According to Jataka Parijata, Saturn is strong in Libra, his own sign, in the southernly course, in own Drekanna, on Saturday, at the end of a Rasi, in war between Grahas, in the dark half and in retrograde motion.

* The details are from Notable Horoscopes by Dr. B. V. Raman.

Saturn together with Venus and Jupiter in the 11th house (Chart 3) gave Ford wealth, fame and popularity which are in agreement with what Horasara says. It was during Saturn Dasa that he saw steady growth in business, status and wealth.
Madhya Parasari also speaks of the favourable results of Saturn, if he be in the Ascendant in his own sign Capricorn or Aquarius and Mercury is associated with Venus or aspects him when the native will have both wealth and fame.

According to the Bhrigu Sutras, when Saturn is well-placed or well-aspected, one is grave, profound, prudent, and cautious and has excellent organising and executive abilities. Thus, while Saturn is a destroyer (of false ideals), he is also a redeemer in that he brings in a state of introspection and stimulates effort towards perfection. Saturn-borns are extremely sensitive but they hide their feelings and emotions under a mask of reserve. If frequently censured, they withdraw from association and their progress and development get much delayed. Saturn is considered to be favourable for people born in the signs owned by Venus whereas he is evil for those born in signs owned by Mercury. He is also beneficial when he is in his own sign or when he occupies the signs of Jupiter or when he is exalted. Saturn when benefic makes a person reliable, honest, sincere, faithful and chaste. He aids concentration, meditation, prayers etc. In short Saturn is not as bad as he is made out to be.
