Some people wallow in misery and poverty throughout life without relief at any time, whatever the Dasas. Such natives have horoscopes showing lords of good houses like the 1st, the 9th and the 10th in the 6th or the 8th or the 12th and lords of bad houses stronger than the lords of good houses. I shall illustrate this by a nativity.
Let us discuss a person born on 22-3-1935 at Namakkal in Salem with a balance 10 months 5 days of Mars Dasa at birth. Rasi: Virgo – Asc and Mars; Libra – Moon; Scor – Jup; Capr – Rahu; Aqu – Mer and Saturn; Pisces-Sun; Aries – Ven; and Cancer – Ketu.
This is a typical chart of one born to suffer, practically unrelieved misery and poverty. The native is a failed S.S.L.C. and a teacher who finds it difficult to make both ends meet. The lord of the 3rd and the 8th is in the Ascendant (not good); the lord of the 12th Sun is in the 7th aspected by Mars. The native lost his first wife to cancer. The lord of the Ascendant and the 10th is in the 6th with its lord and lord of the 2nd and the 9th is in the 8th. The only relieving features are that Venus is in the 7th from the Moon (lord of the 11th in the 2nd) and Jupiter, lord of the 4th and a Badhaka is in the 3rd aspecting the 7th. There is more than medium life (54-56); and, the native’s attempts at suicide failed. Saturn, lord of the 5th and the 6th, is in the 6th (and not in the 5th) and is malefic. And he afflicts Mercury, lord of the 1st and the 10th, ill-placed in the 6th. And Venus, the brilliant lord of the 2nd and the 9th, is relegated to the 8th (bad for finance and fortune), which is good for longevity (minimum 48 or 50) and some legacy. And lords of the 8th and the 12th are in the Ascendant and in the 7th. Kumaraswamiyam says that lord of the 12th in the 7th will make one lose one’s wealth, wife and position. The native’s second wife had a difficult delivery of a child with a consistently poor horoscope – Gemini Ascendant with the Moon and Saturn in the 12th and Jupiter in the 8th in debility. The native suffered from debts and consequent trouble from courts. Thanks to Jupiter aspecting the 9th, house of fortune, and Venus though in the 8th being in Chandra Kendra in a Kendra from natal Moon), the native could escape disgrace and dishonour, threatened by Saturn’s evil aspect on Venus.
There is a dictum that if Venus and lord of the 7th are in the 6th, the native will be impotent.
Such persons will be wise, if they do not marry. Venus is particularly weak in the 6th house. Kalidasa says that even if in the 12th Venus is good if he avoids a sign or Navamsa of Saturn or Mars.
Sukro dwadasa samsthithopi shubhada,
Andamsa rasim vina.
Similarly, some texts speak well of Venus in the 8th, as conducive to longevity and wealth. I pointed out in the previous part of my article that Venus, lord of the 3rd and the 8th, is not bad but good not merely in the 3rd in own house but even in the 8th in own house. But Jataka Parijata says Venus is weak and bad in the 3rd or in the 6th, unless ahead of the Sun, when he becomes benefic. One text praises the position of Venus in the 3rd (Anujagriha); and Sri Ramanuja author of Bhavartha Ratnakara has praised Venus in the 3rd in Libra (Moolatrikona) for Leo Ascendant. Actually, the late Sri Srinivasa Iyengar, a brilliant lawyer, who resigned the post of Advocate-General and overnight became the President of the Indian National Congress held in Gauhati (Assam) was born in Leo Ascendant, inter alia, with the Sun and Mars in the Ascendant, Mercury in the 2nd in Virgo and Venus in the 3rd in own house. But Venus in the 6th or the 12th or even in the 8th in Pisces for Leo Ascendant is found to give trouble in job or profession, whereas Venus in the 3rd in own house gives unadulterated good results. The reason is: Venus as lord of the 3rd and the 10th (Kendradhipati Dosha) is good in the 3rd, as if a malefic in an Upachayastana. But even a malefic is never good in the 8th or the 12th and not good in the 6th when he is a Naisargika (natural) benefic.
Some horoscopes are such that whatever the Dasas, the native is always prosperous and never suffers. Such horoscopes show the lords of Ascendant, the 9th and the 10th in good places and the lords of the 3rd, the 6th, the 8th and the 12th relegated to the 3rd, the 6th, the 8th and the 12th. For instance, Phaladeepika says:
Kendrathrikona nidhaneshu na yasya papah
agnadhipassuraguruscha chattushbayas thow
Bhukthva sukhanivivdhani supnyakarma
Jivath sa vathsarasatham sa vimuktha rogah
meaning, if no malefic occupies a Kendra (the 1st, the 4th, or the 7th or the 10th) or Kona and if the Ascendant lord and Jupiter are associated in a Kendra, the native enjoys all comforts in life and doing good acts, lives long (for 100 years?) free from disease.
Now we can discuss who was born on 24-10-1904 in Tirunelveli. Rasi: Aries -Asc and Jupiter(R); Leo-Mars and Rahu; Libra – Sun and Mercury; Scor – Venus; Cap-Saturn; and Aqu -Ketu.
I cite this horoscope of a rich landlord to show the efficacy of the lords of the 9th and the 10th and the evil of Trika houses and their lords at once. Jupiter, lord of the 9th (and the 12th), is in the Ascendant retrograde in Aries with the Moon in close conjunction; and, Saturn lord of the 10th and the 11th is in the 10th in own house, avoiding Badhakastana (the 11th). The native owned over 80 and odd acres, now divided, to avoid land ceiling. He spent liberally on religious causes and Brahmins and was a firm believer in feeding Vedic Brahmins. But, lord of the 6th in the 7th with the lord of the 2nd in the 8th causes chronic imdebtedness, one another debt having to be incurred after one is cleared. He had enemies and ill-wishers and consequent litigation. He had a daughter by his first wife. And by his second wife, he had a son and two daughters, of whom the son died (mark Mars with Rahu in the 6th, and the Sun lord of the 5th in debility) with Mercury lord of the 6th in the 7th, even though good Jupiter aspects the 5th and the 7th. He was able to live honorably till the very end, thanks to benefic Jupiter, lord of the 9th (and the 12th) in the Ascendant and with the Moon ,lord of the 4th, in spite of debts, that could be liquidated and enemies susbdued.
But, there are some rare people with unique good fortune, due to the lords of the 1st, the 4th the 5th, the 9th and the 10th etc., well placed and strong, and the lords of the 3rd, the 6th, the 8th and the 12th in proper positions, so as not to affect the native adversely, whatever the Dasa. For example, a highly respected lawyer who later became the Advocate-General and Law Adviser to the Governor, had Jupiter, Mars and Rahu in the 5th for Cancer Ascendant, Saturn lord of the 7th and the 8th in the 3rd, and Venus and Mercury (malefic for Cancer Ascendant) in the 6th from the Ascendant. Venus, Badhaka, is alright in the 6th and Mercury lord of the 3rd and the 12th too is good in the 6th and Saturn, lord of the 7th and the 8th (Marakastana, and the worst house, the 8th), ideally placed in the 3rd. Similarly, for Cancer Ascendant, Mercury and Venus are quite good in Virgo, as lords of the 3rd and the 12th are in the 3rd, and as lord of the 4th and 11th or Badhakastana Venus is well relegated to the 3rd; because planets in the 3rd or the 8th or the 12th are in hidden houses and the rays of such planets do not fall on the earth to influence natives. Such persons do not know misery or poverty or dishonor.
According to Phaladeepika,
Shatrunathe tu dusthane
neechamoodhaari-Samyute
Tasmaath balaadhyee
shatrunaasham Ripaushubh
That is, if the lord of the 6th is in the 6th or the 8th or the 12th, in Neecha (debilitation) or combustion by the Sun and if the lord of the Ascendant is stronger than the lord of the 6th, destruction of enemies is to be predicted. The Sloka adds, “if a benefic is in the 6th”. A benefic is weak in the 6th; and, one with a benefic in the 6th will be soft and may not make enemies while a single malefic, like Saturn or Rahu crushes enemies. I emphasize the words a single malefic and or in the above, as two malefics in the 6th like Saturn and Mars, Saturn and Rahu or Mars and Rahu or Ketu can cause havoc to health.
Similarly, another Sloka says:
Kendraadanyatra randhreshe
lagneshaath durbalesathi
Naadhlrnavighnam na klesham
nrunamaayuschiram bhaveth
It means, that if the lord of the 8th is in a place other than the 1st, the 4th, the 7th or the 10th and is weaker than the lord of the Ascendant, the native will have no agony or growing anxiety (called Adhi, a disease afflicting the mind), no impediments, no worry and will live long. Dr.S.Radhakrishnan rose from ordinary circumstances not only to be a learned professor and orator but also President of the Republic of India. He was born in Virgo Ascendant with Mercury (lord of the 2nd and the 10th) and Venus (lord of the 2nd and the 9th) in the Ascendant in Virgo, the Moolatrikona house of Mercury and Mars, lord of the 3rd and the 8th, in the 3rd. According to the Tamil text Siddhar Pulippani lord of the 8th in the 3rd gives long life and victory over enemies or rivals. According to Kalvana Varma, the learned author of Saravili. lord of the 3rd in the 3rd is very good, the results being,
Sahajagate sahajapatau
nrupamantresauhrudeti inpunascho
Gvrupoojana nirathosau nrupasevaayaah
paramdhamam labhate
meaning, that if the lord of the 3rd is in the 3rd. the native becomes a king’s minister or royal adviser, is very adept in befriending people, is given to honouring his Guru or preceptor, and earns much money by serving the king.
