Yogada Yogas
Slogans are a unique feature of astrology. They are a special tool available for the prediction of events. Different Yogas present play significant roles in shaping the success or failure of an individual during the Dasa, Bhukti, and Antara of the planet causing the Yogas. Parasara’s Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra and other classics have described several such Yogas. Dr.B.V. Raman has dealt with many Yogas in his book 300 Important Combinations.
Besides the many Yogas described in classics, there are some special types of Yogas known as Yogada Yogas which bestow power, wealth and prosperity on the native. This paper is an attempt to discuss these Yogas and their effects.

The definitions of some special Lagnas, involved in these Yogas, viz, Hora Lagna and Ghatika Lagna are important.
Hora Lagna
Hora Lagna* is the position of the Sun at the time of sunrise and moves at the rate of one Rasi per hora (hour).
Computation of Hora Lagna Example: Time of birth: 19h.23m. Sunrise: 6h.37m. Longitude of the Sun at 6h.37m. is 24° 17′ Capricorn.
(i) Find the difference between the birth time and the sunrise time,
19h.23m – 6h.37m = 12h. 46m.
Convert this into minutes.
12 x 60+46 = 766 minutes.
(ii) Divide this figure by 2.
766/2= 383.
(iii) Sun’s longitude at sunrise is 294° 17′. Add 383 to this.
383+294° 17′ = 677°17.
Subtracting 360° from this figure, we get 317°17′
Hora Lagna =17° 17′ Aquarius.
Classification of Vedic Astrology
According to Dr. B.V. Raman (‘Studies in Jaimini Astrology, Chapter 2, 20), Hora Lagna is calculated as follows:-
Divide the time of birth in ghatis (from sunrise) by 2.5. The quotient plus one counted from the Sun or Lagna according to as the Janma Lagna is odd or even represents the Hora Lagna. The remainder reduced to degrees gives the exact longitude of the Hora Lagna.
Hora Lagna (HL) if present in a horoscope is an indicator of Dhana or money.

Ghatika Lagna
Ghatika Lagna derives its name from the fact that the Lagna takes approximately 5 Ghatikas to rise and Ghatika Lagna being 5 times faster takes only 1 Ghatika to rise. Thus, the Lagna which rises after each Ghati becomes the Ghatika Lagna.
Ghatika Lagna is the position of the Sun at the time of sunrise. It moves at the rate of one Rasi per Ghati or 24 minutes.
Computation of Ghatika Lagna
(i) Find the time of sunrise and Sun’s longitude at sunrise.
(ii) Find the difference between birth time and the sunrise time. Convert the difference into minutes.
(iii) Multiply the number by 5/4. The result is the advancement of Ghatika Lagna since sunrise in degrees.
(iv) Add the Sun’s longitude at sunrise (in degrees) to the above figure. Expunge multiples of
360° and reduce the number to the range 0° – 360°. This is the longitude of the Ghatika Lagna.
Example: Taking the same case given above,
(i) Difference between the birth time and the sunrise time
19h.23m. -6h.37m. = 12h 46m.
Converting this into minutes
12 x 60 + 46 = 766 minutes.
Multiply this figure by 5/4.
766×5/4=957.5.
(ii) Sun’s longitude at sunrise = 294°17′
Adding 957 °30′ to 294° 17′ = 1251° 47′.
Subtracting multiples of 360 ° from this figure,
we get 171° 47′.
Ghatika Lagna = 21°47′ Virgo.
According to Dr. B.V. Raman (Studies in Jaimini Astrology, Chapter-2, 24), Ghatika Lagna is calculated as follows :
Divide the birth Ghatis by 12, reject the quotient and the integral part of the remainder plus 1 counted from the Janma Lagna gives Ghatika Lagna. The fractional part of the
remainder reduced to degrees gives the exact longitude.
According to Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra
Chapter 39,
Slokal2: Even if a single Graha gives a Drishti (aspect) to the natal Lagna or Hora Lagna or Ghatika Lagna, the native will become a king.
Sloka24: If two or all of Bhava, Hora and Ghatika Lagnas receive drishti (aspect) from exalted Grahas, Raja Yoga is formed.
It is to be borne in mind that the aspects are as per Jaimini were all cardinal signs aspect fixed signs, except the adjacent one; all fixed signs aspect movable signs except the adjacent one; and the dual signs aspect each other. This applies to the planets in the signs also.
The YogadaYogas may be classified into two categories.
The association with Hora Lagna bestows financial gains and hence such Yogada is known as
(a) Dhana Yogada, and
(b) Association with Ghatika Lagna gives power and status and hence such Yogada is known as Raja Yogada.
Chart 1: Narendra Modi: Born September 17,1950 at 9h.53m at Vadanager, Gujarat, India with a balance of 2 years 1 month 16 days of Saturn Dasa at birth.
There are 2 Yogada Yogas in Chart 1:
(i) Jupiter is the lord of Hora Lagna and aspects the Lagna producing Yogada Yoga conferring wealth and prosperity.
(ii) Venus is the lord of Ghatika Lagna and aspects the Lagna producing Raja Yogada Yoga conferring power and authority.
Narendra Modi became the chief minister of Gujarat on October 7,2001 in Saturn Dasa Venus Bhukti.
Maha Yogada Yogas
When a planet aspect or conjoins all the three Lagnas, i.e, Lagna, Hora Lagna, and Ghatika Lagna, Maha YogadaYoga is formed.
Along with the ownership of the signs of Lagna, Hora Lagna, Ghatika Lagna, ownership of 7th from these signs can also be considered.
According to Prof.P.S. Sastri [Maharshi Jaimini’s Jaimini Sutram. Sloka 27.]: “It is said that RajaYoga arises when the Lagna and the seventh of Janrna Lagna, Hora Lagna, and Ghatika Lagna are aspected by one and the same planet. This Rajayoga is to be similarly explained with reference to Navamsa Lagna and Drekkana Lagna.”
The Maha YogadaYoga in its Dasa bestows excellent prosperity in the Bhukti of an auspicious planet (related to the Yogada by aspect, conjunction or exchange).
Kevala Maha Yogada
Whenever a (benefic) lord becomes the Maha Yogada, it is called the Kevala Maha Yogada. This planet has the highest capacity to bestow prosperity on a native. During the Dasa of such a planet, the person can rise to riches even from rags.
Chart 2: Dr.S. Radhakrishnan: Bom September 5, 1888, at 11h. 57m. at 13 N 11, 79 E 38 (Tiruttani) with a balance of 3 years 3 months 10 days of Ketu Dasa at birth.
(i) Saturn aspects Lagna and Ghatika Lagna (Scorpio) and also Hora Lagna (Aquarius) producing Maha Yogada Yoga conferring power, authority and wealth.
(ii) Rahu aspects Lagna and Ghatika Lagna (Scorpio) and also Hora Lagna (Aquarius), forming Maha Yogada Yoga conferring power, authority and wealth.
In addition, Chart 2 has also 3 YogadaYogas:
(i) Jupiter aspects Ghatika Lagna and Lagna Yogada Yoga conferring power and authority. Mars aspects Ghatika Lagna and Lagna YogadaYoga conferring power and authority.
(iii) Ketu aspects Ghatika Lagna and Lagna YogadaYoga conferring power and authority.
Dr.S. Radhakrishnan became Vice-President of India on January 26,1952 during his Rahu-Mars period and the President of India on May 14,1962 during his Jupiter-Venus period. Rahu, Mars, and Jupiter are planets producing Maha YogadaYoga and Yogada Yogas.
Yogada Yogas for Wealth
As Hora Lagna is associated with wealth and Ghatika Lagna with power and authority, these Yogas should be present in the horoscopes of wealthy people also. Horoscopes of industrialists and entrepreneurs who are some of the richest people in the world were examined for the presence of the Yogada Yogas and Maha Yogada Yogas.
Fifty horoscopes of this group were examined. It was found that 42 people (84%) had either Yogada Yogas (HL) or YogadaYogas (GL) or both and 48 people (96%) were found to have Yogada Yogas (both types together) or Maha Yogada Yogas or both. These figures may vary to some extent if the sample size is increased. Table I shows the distribution of Yogada Yogas (HL), Yogada Yogas (GL) and Maha Yogada Yogas.
Chart 3: Bill Gates: Bom October 28, 1955, at 21h.15m. at 47 N 36 112 W20 (Seattle, USA <) with a balance of 3 years 3 months 10 days of Ketu Dasa at birth.
The horoscope of Bill Gates, one of the richest in the world, makes for an interesting example in this context.
Bill Gates (Chart 3) has three Maha Yogada Yogas conferring power, authority and wealth.
i) The Moon aspects the Lagna, Hora Lagna, and Ghatika Lagna.
ii) Mercury is in Ghatika Lagna and aspects the Lagna and Hora Lagna.
iii) Mars is in Ghatika Lagna and is aspecting the Lagna and Hora Lagna —■ Maha Yogada Yoga.
Bill Gates, a multi-billionaire, with Paul Allen launched the Microsoft Corporation in 1975 during his Mercury-Saturn period.
Mukesh Ambani (Chart 4) has five Yogada Yogas and one Maha Yogada Yoga.
Chart 4: Mukesh Ambani: Born April 19, 1957, at 19h. 13m. at Yemen 12 N 47,45 E12 Aden) with a balance of 1 year 4 months 22 days of Moon Dasa at birth.
(i) Sun is aspecting Lagna and Ghatika Lagna (Aquarius) — Yogada Yoga (GL) conferring power and authority.
(ii) Venus is aspecting Lagna and Ghatika Lagna (Aquarius) —Yogada Yoga (GL) conferring power and authority.

(vi) Mercury is Hora Lagna lord and is aspecting Lagna and Ghatika Lagnas (Aquarius) — Maha Yogada Yoga.
Mukesh Ambani is the richest Indian and also one of the richest in the world.
Film Personalities
Another category which is found to have the benefit of Yogada Yogas is the film world personalities.
Fifty-five horoscopes of this group were examined. It was found that 23 people (41.8%) have Yogada Yogas (HL), 28 persons (50.9%) have Yogada Yogas (GL) and 31 (56.4%) persons have Maha Yogada Yogas. 42 horoscopes (76.4%) have either Yogada Yogas (HL or GL) or both and 53 (96.4%) have Yogada Yogas (both types together) or Maha Yogada Yogas or both.
These figures may vary to some extent if the sample size is increased.
The horoscope of Marlon Brando, famous Hollywood actor and film director ( Chart 5), is a good example.
Chart 4 has 2 Yogada Yogas and 2 Maha
Marlon Brando: Chart 5: Bom April 3, 1924 at 23h.00m.at 33N18, 85W18 (at Omaha, Alabama, USA) with a balance of 12 years 4 months 19 days of Mercury Dasa at birth.
Yogada Yogas.
(i) Jupiter is in Lagna which is also Ghatika Lagna – Yogada Yogas (GL).
(ii) Ketu is lord of Lagna and Ghatika Lagna — Yogada Yogas (GL).
(iii) Mercury is lord of Hora Lagna and aspects Lagna and Ghatika Lagna — Maha Yogada Yogas.
(iv) Mars is the lord of Lagna and Ghatika Lagna aspecting Hora Lagna (Virgo) — Maha Yogada Yogas.
Many film personalities have Yogada Yogas and Maha Yogada Yogas. Similar is the case with sports personalities.
There are 2 Yogada Yogas and one Maha Yogada Yoga in tennis champion Rafael Radal’s case (Chart 6).
Chart 6: Rafael Nadal: Born June 3, 1986 at 7h.15m. at 30N 34, 03E12 (Manacor, Spain) with a balance of 6 years 5 months 3 days of Ketu Dasa at birth.
(i) The Sun is in Hora Lagna (Taurus), aspecting the Lagna.
(ii) Venus is Hora Lagna lord and also the Lagna Lord.
(iii) Ketu is the Ghatika Lagna lord and is in Lagna aspecting Hora Lagna (Taurus).
It must be noted that the state of wealth and prosperity in all these categories of people cannot be attributed solely to the presence of these two Yogas as other important Yogas like Raja Sambandha Yogas, Raja Yogas, Vipareeta Raja Yogas, etc., can also be present. The presence of the Yogada Yogas can be considered as a contributory factor for the success of these people in their respective fields.
Politician and Rulers
Charts 1 and 2 are examples for YogadaYogas and Maha YogadaYogas in the horoscopes of political leaders and rulers. It is found that YogadaYogas and Maha YogadaYogas are present in quite a large number of the horoscopes of the ruling category. However, it is seen these Yogas do not play a pivotal role in the success of the political leaders and rulers. Out of 340 horoscopes analyzed, only 82% of the successful politicians were found to have YogadaYogas (both HL and GL) and 45%, Maha YogadaYogas. However, it is seen that more than 91 % of political leaders and rulers are found to have Raja Sambandha Yogas and Raja Yogas. Hence, it can be rightly concluded that YogadaYogas and Maha Yogada Yogas are not a critical factor for politicians to achieve or wield political power. They play only a supplementary or complementary role for achieving success in politics. • (70.18)
